APK safety checks & India online gaming guidance

Review APK source identity, hashes, Android permissions, Play Protect and India’s current online gaming framework before installing.

Check the source, the file and the permissions

A secure connection helps protect a transfer, but the connection alone does not establish who published the APK. Match the app name, distribution channel, package identifier and signing certificate with the publisher’s records.

  • Source identity: follow the publisher’s own distribution channel and inspect the destination host.
  • File identity: compare the size and SHA-256 hash with a trusted release record. A matching hash identifies the same bytes; it does not certify that the software is safe.
  • Signing identity: compare the release certificate with the installed app and documented signing history.
  • Permissions: ask whether each permission supports a feature you chose. Review sensitive access in Android settings.

Keep Google Play Protect enabled

Google Play Protect checks for potentially harmful behaviour in apps, including software obtained outside Google Play. If it warns about or blocks a file, stop and review the publisher and reported issue. Avoid disabling protections to complete an installation.

An automated scan is one useful signal, alongside source identity and permissions. The term “100% safe” is too strong for a download directory to establish from a URL or an app icon.

India: social games and online money games

India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games and their advertising, promotion and facilitation. The government’s implementing Rules came into force on 1 May 2026 and describe a determination framework for game formats.

Use permitted social play. A Teen Patti or rummy brand name, a “skill game” description, an age badge or an old state-by-state list does not establish whether a particular game format is permitted. Check the actual provider and its published determination or registration information where applicable.

This summary is based on the government releases linked below. An app’s legal status requires facts about its provider and actual game format, rather than inference from its name.

Protect your account and device

Keep one-time codes and account recovery details private. Review app access after updates, remove unused permissions and install Android security updates supported by your device. If an app’s behaviour changes unexpectedly, stop using it while investigating.
